Shifting Moods

25 Jan

Wong Kar Wai’s noir styled melodramas “In the mood for love” and “2046″ and the stunning visuals by Christopher Doyle has always been a huge influence for me.  It was great to work with the two models, Sophie Pham and Daniel Paciocco to create our own cinematic moments of longing and loss.  The muted reds, yellows and greens lighting serve to heighten the mood of uncertainty as the two figures play off each other’s gazes.  This film noir styled shoot was actually initiated by Styledbyjoolz Makim but I was grateful she left me space to create my own vision for these images.

It was also a huge pleasure to work with award winning hairdresser Lorna Evans.  I sincerely hope to work with her again.

The Fashion Game

25 Jan

I had the opportunity to work with stylist Styledbyjoolz Makim and the fantastic collection of clothes she had access to.  I explained that I wanted to do a shoot that had an aggressive and competitive feel to it.  By a miracle, we secured a squash court to get that stark and worn look to contrast the high fashion looks of the two models, Anna Nguyen and Aneira Kingsley.

Colour Complex

22 Oct

Working with a model over multiple shoots has its advantages.  You get to know what each other can do and trust in each other’s ideas.  Carly has been a versatile and engaging model to work with and in this latest shoot it was great to explore new concepts and push each other to new creative challenges.  This was such an exciting shoot, working with explosive colours and patterns.  A stunning Melbourne day inviting us out to play.  Special thanks to Gemma Reynolds for her assistance in styling and her beautiful make up and hair work.

Restless Soul

22 Oct

Here’s the latest shoot with model Lydia Turner at the fantastic Gracious Space location.  This place is such an inspiration, as set designers and artists worked there throughout the day.  This shoot was focused on the retro decor that adorned the back room.  I lit this shoot very simply, sometimes just using available light, to keep the mood earthy and intimate.

Red Man @ Regurgitator

29 Sep

I recently went to the Regurgitator concert at the HiFi which was a nostalgic blast.  The band was just as good as ever and their new stuff was just as good as their old stuff.  I took my old beaten up Canon EOS 350d with my cheap little 50mm lens to get some photos of the band.  I decided to take some images of the crowd and captured this strangely poetic image of a man lit in red staring back at me from the audience.  Freaky but very cool.

Here are the shots of the bands that played: Boys Boys Boys, Disasteradio and Regurgitator.

Exhibition opening night

13 Sep

It was a packed night at the Brunswick Street Gallery for the opening of the Fashion as Art exhibition.  I had a big wall to myself to display my four 20×30″ prints.  These images came from my Carly and the Caravan series.  I must say that the images held up very well to that enlargement size and it made all the careful hard work and editing time worth while.  This photo below is of me and the lovely model Carly Peacock, who modeled in these photos.  Thanks so much to all who turned up and supported this show.  For those interested to see these images and the rest of the exhibition in person, it is on till the 22nd September.  See the invite for more details.
